The Benefits of Nature: Apple Cider Vinegar

We’ve all been exposed to vinegar in some form or fashion. From pickled veggies to salad dressing to the long-running tradition of home dyed Easter eggs, it is fairly safe to say that the word vinegar has crossed our lips at some point.

Did you know that one specific type of this tangy stuff can almost be termed the “multi-purpose fountain of youth”?  Well, I wouldn’t go THAT far but there is a type of vinegar with such amazing health benefits, you might call it the elixir of the goddesses!

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has been around for quite some time, dating back to 400 BC.  It is made by pressing the juice from apples, then putting this juice through a fermentation process that creates an “alcohol”.  It is often used for culinary purposes like salads, chutneys, pickling and other food toppers like marinades.  However, it is the cleansing and healing properties of this zesty liquid that has me hooked.

Properties of Use

Right out of the bottle, you can use this refreshing liquid on your skin.  It is ANTI-septic, ANTI-bacterial, ANTI-viral and ANTI-fungal.  I like to use it on my face immediately after I wash my skin.  It is a natural skin toner and pH balancing tool.

It can be consumed to help treat sore throats (bacterial and viral), acne, allergies, candida, rashes, infections and even acidic systems that create a playground for disease growth.  It is believed to be a weapon against the breeding ground for cancer, which thrives in highly acidic environments such as those with a diet of lots of meat, coffee, black tea, alcohol, white foods, processed foods, pasta and other acidic foods.

Drinking 1 Liter of clean filtered H2O upon rising is one of the BEST things you can do for your health each day.  Adding up to 2 TBSP of apple cider vinegar is better!!!!

Studies have linked apple cider vinegar to lower body fat (up to 10%), specifically when consumed prior to each meal.

From a healthy blood level perspective, it is believed to LOWER those nasty bad cholesterols, or LDL while RAISING the GOOD cholesterols, or HDL levels.  Moreover, it is found to benefit those with TYPE II DIABETES by improving the insulin sensitivity when high carbohydrate meals are consumed.

What To Buy

Because apples are touted as one of the most pesticide-ridden mass produced fruits, steering clear of “non-organic” brands would be a prudent suggestion.  Opt for raw, unfiltered and unpasteurized organic apple cider, which is what the old-timers used back in 400 BC before we had mass production units for profit.  These brands will also contain the “Mother” or “Vein of the Mother” or “Vein”, which is really what I term floaters.  These floaters are said to be the magic in the potion!


Drinking about 1-2 TBSP in warm water or room temp water before bed, upon rising and before meals is preferred.  Sipping through a straw can help with any possibility of enamel erosion.  Work up slowly to 1-2 TBSP to allow your body to adjust.  Otherwise, you may experience some side effects like excess gas and bloat.

Remember, nothing happens overnight and consistency is KEY.

Humans ARE Perfection

A very wise and youthful soul once shared with me a pearl of wisdom that sparked a surge of inner energy. This person confidently expressed to me:

“There are no mistakes in nature”

On the surface, there was much validity in these words.  I mean, just look around you!!!  The trees, the wind, the rivers, the sky and the rocks all expertly exist not because of man or mistakes, but because of experience.  Even insects, reptiles and mammals have evolved due to our changing environment, none of which are ‘mistakes’.

Humans are nature.  They are carefully and expertly created based on their PAST experiences.  They may bare the cracks of the most heinous of conditions, the scars of physical conflict and the microscopic alterations of evolution.

It is for this reason that HUMANS are not a mistake.  Not their feelings, actions, emotions, personalities or behaviors.

We as humans are perfect in our evolutionary imperfections.

We are not broken – not spiritually, not emotionally, not physically. We are exactly as we are meant to be whether needy, strong-willed, hardheaded, jealous, doormats, self-degrading, temperamental, removed, sensuous, small-framed, big butted, slouchy shouldered, oily skin, angry, perky, soft-bellied, helpful of strangers or whatever plethora of emotional, physical and personality given traits exist in our beings.

“Getting Over It”, “Moving On” , “You NEED to do ……” or “You/I Need Time To Evaluate”, or some semblance of these words, are phrases imperfectly created to hasten the evolution of a human – to change them.  It is meant to FIX the BROKEN, and remember, WE ARE NOT broken.

We are allowed and encouraged to speak of these traits if done in kindness and compassion such as letting someone know their actions are painful.  We are allowed to fight for these traits if we are ever attacked for being spiritual instead of a “Christian”, lacking trust in humans instead of trusting everyone or being a sugar addict instead of having a perfect diet.

What we ARE NOT allowed to do is to walk away or berate or humiliate or call out someone because they feel something that maybe someone else doesn’t see. At least not without harming someone else.

We are all given a certain specific set of skills while in this life.  These skills enable us to be WISE in our statements and actions.  The skill of understanding the body and its needs enables us to provide for our vessel and be well.  The skill of understanding people enables us to intuitively see underlying negative/ill intent energies of others.  The skill of understanding total wellness provides us with a goal of being of mind, body and spirit.  These skills are OUR tools. Not everyone has the same skills we do.

We must TRUST the skills of the one who possesses them when we are ignorant to them.

What this means is when someone with the skill of effective coaching is offering helpful words, it is important for us to listen.  When someone who has an in depth understanding of nutrition, chemicals and the body provides information, we need to listen.  When a person of soul skill sees the auras of people, we must listen.  When the carpenter says this plan is structurally unsound, we must open our ears!

I would never seek assistance from a pest control person, whose skill set is primarily eradicating rodents and destructive insects from our homes and businesses, on matters of relationships.  I would never seek bricklaying advice from a nurse.  I would never choose to have a McDonald’s cashier give me advice on heart surgery.

Why then, must we be so difficult when it comes to listening to what others have to say?

I am not broken and therefore, am not imperfect.  I am exactly as nature has made me.  I am exactly as I am intended to be.  I am not needing a fix. I am not needing a repair. I am not needing betterment.  I am exactly as I am meant to be today.  This applies to all humans as well.

Those who can appreciate this will appreciate that it is not our job or position to repair other humans, to fix the earth, to change animals or to convert individuals.

A malicious hunter will shoot its target and then use its body for display in a trophy room, never respecting the conflict it has seen or the successes it has made….never understanding or respecting the animal as perfect in nature.  The corporate giant will eradicate forests to erect mega-centers for THEIR own comfort and profit…..never seeing the migratory butterflies or birds who utilize the space on their journey.  The rigid individual will stand unyielding to opening their thoughts and perspectives….never seeing the small successes and the potential in another.

Wellness requires an understanding of us as humans.  Our quirky emotional hardheaded sides.  We lovingly embrace these traits because they are EXACTLY WHAT nature has created. We don’t try to change them.  We don’t try to fix them.  We don’t lob them off or chop them down or decapitate their head’s for our trophy / success wall.

We treat them with kindness so they can evolve and become “smooth” over time.

KALE ALLERGY: Mind Over Immunological Matter

I’ve been dealing with “excuses” for quite a long time.  It is easy to see an excuse for NOT doing something good, healthy or nutritionally sound coming a mile away.  In fact, I have a little jingle when I see it coming….”don’t tell me your excuse, it is much more fun to guess”.

Simplistically speaking, allergies are the body’s reaction to certain things. It is an immunological response!  We have allergies to pollen, dust, animal dander, trees, grass, insect stings, spider bites and even certain foods.

The number of people with true food allergies in the United States is a staggering 15 million!  That sounds like a lot…..when in reality, it is about 4% or LESS than 1 in every 21 people you meet. Think of your fitness or college class and try and relate that number to the attendees.

For those who suffer true food allergies, the medical condition is REAL, with the most common offenders being milk, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts (which are not a nut….but I’ll save that for later), wheat, soy, fish and shellfish.  There are even some odd allergies to things like sesame, corn, meat and a few fruits.  These reactions are more commonly experienced very close to consumption and are repeatable.  Their symptoms could be fatal.

More interestingly, the WHY one develops an allergy to food is largely unknown although there is strong a strong correlation to GUT HEALTH.  Debates on whether placental issues, formula feeding or giving an infant foods too soon and too much are ongoing but lean, however, gut health in general is a MAJOR culprit.  As infants, our guts are almost iron-proof with healthy colonies of beneficial bacteria ready to accept those things we eat as normal.  Changes in these colonies through unnecessary through the mechanisms listed above or the use of antibiotics (using them for VIRUS related illness such as coughs or colds or flu or sinus infections or viral ear infections….the list goes on) could play a significant role in gut health changes.

RARE, however, is an allergy to one of the top superfoods….KALE.

More likely, the reaction one endures to such a powerhouse of nutrients, like KALE, is related to a detoxification process, or more commonly termed “cleansing”.  The detox process is working to rid your body of the harmful and toxic chemicals you may be use to consuming in your “normal diet” and lifestyle.  Chemical laden foods, processed flour products and sugars are common culprits.

The sad reality, however, is people will actually GIVE UP eating something beneficial because their body initially used it to help clean out the toxic crap….and then label the reaction a self-diagnosed food allergy.

Studies using double blind challenges to test food allergies reveal there is a GROSS overstatement by individuals that they, or their children, have a food allergy which validates my sarcasm…donuts are more tolerated by the mind.

True allergies often impact the throat, tongue, breathing process and even skin.  There can be vomiting and worse, DEATH.  Again, it is an immunological response to a food.

There is often a confusion between an allergy and food intolerance, where the body reacts negatively to certain foods like milk or glutens through bloat, diarrhea and headaches, but these are not allergies, per se. Food intolerance is simply the body’s inability to breakdown or digest certain foods or components of food.  Just ask anyone who has a family member diagnosed with “lactose intolerance”…….

If you are looking to get the most bang for your nutritional buck, then superfoods such as KALE and SPINACH should be at the top of your list barring any real medical conditions you may have such as a compromised immune system.  Individuals with Thyroid problems may have a sensitivity to cruciferous veggies (KALE, broccoli, cabbage…etc) due to the “goltrogens” found in these foods.  Again, that explanation is for a future read.  However, a true allergic reaction to foods is most often with “reproducible” response to their consumption.

If you believe you have an allergy to a specific food, it may be in your best interest to consult with your family physician and get tested in order to avoid potentially rare, but fatal results.  Otherwise, your mild stomach cramps and softer than normal stools may simply be your body telling you “THANK YOU for not eating junk this week but thinking of my needs so that I can face the vitality end of the wellness spectrum”!

For the vast majority, it is likely you have a coincidental bout of the shits caused by something offensive (virus, too much tequila or excessive protein) 3-7 days earlier and now you are looking for another excuse to not change patterns of behavior.
